Diabetic Retinopathy: Frightening, but Controllable

Background Diabetic Retinopathy

This slide shows the retina of a patient with diabetes who is suffering from Background Diabetic Retinopathy — an early stage of diabetic retinopathy. Note the red hemorrhages and yellow fat deposits in the retina that cause damage and impair vision. At this stage, symptoms may or may not be evident, which underscores the importance of regular checkups and early diagnosis. Background Diabetic Retinopathy requires laser (photocoagulation) treatment.
